Flying Dogs take 3 straight from Nightmare to move to 7-0

Over the past five days, the Flying Dogs had a home and home with the Winfield Nightmare. The Dogs were able to sweep all three of the games, winning both ends of a doubleheader at Century High School on Sunday 14-1 and 7-1 and then winning 4-1  over the Nightmare at Tuscarora on Thursday.

On Sunday, the Flying Dogs started off by scoring 14 runs in the first four innings on their way to a 14-1 victory. Newest Flying Dog Paul Roemer led the Flying Dogs attack with three hits and two stolen bases while Chris Godfrey added two hits and three RBI including a two run homer, his second home run of the season. Jared Putman added a three run homer which provided his 3 RBI on the day. Steve Shriner had a two hit game as well. Matt Buchholz picked up his second win of the year, going all 5 innings, allowing only 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 8.

In game two on Sunday, the Flying Dogs were able to come away with a 7-1 victory. Ryan Morse led the Flying Dogs with three hits and 2 RBI. Paul Roemer continued his hot hitting, with two hits and 3 RBI. Chris Godfrey also had a two hit game as well. Steve Shriner added a solo home run. Matt Buchholz, Galen Morres, Nat Puryear and Matt Myers each had a hit. Dave Hostetter was able to go five shutout innings to earn his second victory on the year. Hostetter limited the Nightmare to three hits, striking out seven while walking four. Steve Canale came in and pitched the final two innings to lock up the victory, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two.

On Thursday, the Flying Dogs completed the week sweep, breaking open a scoreless tie with a four run fourth inning en route to a 4-1 victory over the Nightmare. For the first three innings, the Dogs were not able to figure out the Nightmare starter. In the fourth inning, Chris Godfrey started the inning with a single before Dave Hostetter drove him in with a RBI single. Nat Puryear followed with a single and then Jared Putman drove in Hostetter with a RBI single. John Eliot had an infield single, followed by a Paul Roemer RBI single for the fourth run of the inning. The Dogs were led at the plate by Dave Hostetter who had three hits on the day.  Putman added 2 hits as well.

Christian O’Reilly made his first start as a member of the Flying Dogs, going an interesting three innings which saw him work into and out of a couple of jams, including allowing no runs in the third inning in which the Nightmare had the bases loaded with no outs. O’Reilly allowed no runs in three innings of work while working around two hits and five walks, striking out three to earn his first win. Matt Hughes worked the final three innings to complete the victory, allowing one run on three hits, striking out four to earn the three inning save.

With the three wins, the Flying Dogs move to 7-0 on the season. Next up for the Flying Dogs is the Reno Powell Memorial Tournament in Hagerstown, MD. The Flying Dogs will have three tough tests in pool play starting at 3:00 PM on Saturday at North Hagerstown High School with a matchup with the Maryland Dodgers of the Susquehanna League.
